Fishing Reports

December 7, 2009
Back from the Cows or Bust 10-day trip. Both the fishing and the weather were good. They’re not all cows, but there’s a lot of good, solid, smaller fish, too from 60 to 125 lbs.

Francisco Cosenza of Spring Valley won the jackpot for a 241.6-pound tuna he got with a sardine on an 8/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 30 WS reel and a Seeker 66463 XXH rod. “He kicked my butt,” said Francisco. “He fought for two hours and took me around the boat twice. He finally came up on the bow.” Mike Hessian of Fullerton won second place for a 171.6-pounder. Kirk Drickman of Westlake Village won third place for a 163.8-pound yellowfin tuna.

Lots of "treats" and some "tricks" on our Annual San Diego Anglers ten-day charter The limited load of 17 visited Guadalupe Island during a brief open period, and then went down to The Ridge. We got out limits of tuna and there were a lot of small dorado, but the anglers agreed to release all of them. We only kept a few bigger ones.

Bob McKittrick won first place in the jackpot for a 97.8-pound yellowfin he bagged with a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 80-poundSoft Steel Ultra line and 80-pound Big Game Spectra on an Accurate B2 600 N reel and a Calstar 700 H rod.
Tim Gunter of Carlsbad won second place for a 79.8-pound tuna.

The always wonderful Lage family charter returned today with more fish than they could handle. A really fun time was had by all. Two days fishing offshore for lots of Yellowfin from throwbacks to 59.8 lbs and limits of Dorado up to 22 lbs. Stephanie held her own around all those guys and is becoming a top angler. We topped off with some Yellowtail along the coast. Another highlight of the trip was the delicious Queen Charlotte-caught Salmon provided by Bob Lage for all to enjoy, Dan and Joe did a great job with it. A sardine on a 2/0 Mustad hook won first place in the jackpot for Bob Curtis of San Diego. He said the 59.8-pound yellowfin fought him for 30 minutes after it bit on his 30-pound P-Line. He used a Penn GL reel and a Seeker 6460 rod. Chartermaster Bob Lage won second place for a 58.2-pound tuna, and Doug Buck of Santa Ana won third place for a 52.6-pound yellowfin tuna. All of the large yellowfin caught on the trip came from open water.

September 12, 2009

Back from Cofe 6-day trip. We had fun even if the bite was a little scratchy. We also had some big fish. The biggest was a 76-pounder caught by Rick Braswell of Irvine. "He bit 100 yards out and fought me for 20 minutes," said Braswell. Rick said he pinned a sardine on a 3/0 Mustad hook tied to 40-pound Big Game line and 65-pound Spectra. He used a Penn 12T reel modified by Cofe, and a Sabre 670 rod. Rick’s brother Mike Braswell of Wildemar took a 69-pound tuna and got second place for it. Sam Romero of Santa Ana kept his three-time jackpot string alive by winning third place for a 67.2-pound yellowfin tuna. The three all got new Seeker rod blanks from the chartermaster and Joe Pfister. A contest to see who could release the most fish ended in a tie between Bryan Romine of Ranch Cucamonga and Byron Cloar of Hawthorne.

Back from a nice 3-day. Awesome weather with some Albies on the kelp patties then onto Bluefin, Yellowfin, Yellowtail, Dorado, and Leighton Pagay, Jr., one of our junior anglers hooked and released a Marlin. What a thrill! Fun for all, especially the jackpot winners, Dan Felker, Victor Bermundez, and Gary Kim, all with Bluefin in the 40-lb range.

August 2 2009

Just returned from Tiny's Great Adventure with an awesome catch including YFT averaging 50 lbs, 30 to 45-lb BFT, Albacore, Yellowtail, and Dorado. What more can you ask for? Flat, calm weather. Joe stepped up and performed supremely as chef this trip so that Dan could spend some quality newlywed time on land. We even saw nature at its finest with whales, tuna, and a meatball all meeting for a spectacular sight and fishing opportunity. My personal favorite is watching this interaction. Can't wait until tomorrow to see it again.

Hot spots open on the next trip 22, leaving Tues. Aug. 4th at 9 pm and returning Thurs. Aug 6 am.

The Jan Ishii group, as always, was a great time. Our trip started with a kelp loaded with great-size Yellowtail up to low 30s lbs. thanks to our friend Brian on the Angler who had enough yellows from Cedros. The rest of the trip we sratched up a very nice catch of Albacore and a smattering of both Yellowfin & Bluefin, capped by some Dorado. we could have used a little better weather, but the group held tough and keep catching. The weather came down today and we hope it holds for awhile. The cooks keep the great food coming including some favorites Albie burgers, stuffed pork roast and the aways popular Prime Rib. Jan thanks from the crew and me for putting together a awesome group. Can't wait for next year's trip.

Good Fishing,

Just returned from the annual Triple SSS charter, sorry some of you regulars couldn't make it. Despite overall slow fishing, we scratched together a fair trip for our 14 anglers with 59 Albies, 15 Bluefin Tuna, and 38 Yellowtail. Not bad for just a couple of hardworking guys! Looking forward to next year's charter.

June 26, 2009 ETA for Sunday is 8 am

We scratched fished all day with our 14 guys putting together 23 Albacore and 13 Bluefin tuna & 28 Yellows. The weather is fair.

We liked the BFT sign in that they stuck around for a while a couple of stops, mostly biting at the beginning. Dan's BBQ Chicken was moist and delicious and as always the prime rib the first night was off the hook, PERFECT. Spots still open on trip leaving this Sunday thru Wednesday, hop on!

June 24, 2009

Just returned from our 2.5 day with smiles all around. First day we saw lots of kelp patty Yellowtail and a couple of fair stops of Albacore. Day two went a bit further and decided to try our hand at some tuna fishing. We saw good fish that didn't want to bite, but ended the trip with 47 Albacore, 4 Bluefin, and plenty of small Yellowtail up to 18 lbs. Nice weather and a good spread out sign of Albacore from 40 to 200 miles. Looking forward to our next 3 day trips.Don't miss your opportunity to join Mike and the Vagabond crew on some action with light loads. We have lots of room on the next several trips. June 18, 2009 HOME

Fishing until 2PM on Wednesday, anglers were able to land 80 albacore, three bluefin tuna and one yellowfin tuna. Gerald Kusumoto took the jackpot with a 39 pound bluefin tuna. Gerald's fish was the second to last fish caught on the trip. Second and third place jackpots went to Mike Livingston and Jeff "Panic" Squires. Mike's fish was 36 pounds and Jeff's fish was 32 pounds. Chris, Mike did not wait until the last minute to claim this prize.

Albacore and bluefin signs were very encouraging. Numerous mixed tuna schools were metered, those that wanted to play provided lots of action including a simaltaneous strike on a five person trolling team. Most fish were in the 14 to 20 pound range. Eddie Hagihara had the largest albacore, a 30 pounder caught on the troll. Clearly, the much awaited 2009 albacore season is finally here.

Space is still available on upcoming June trips. Anglers are encouraged to review the Vagabond trip schedule and call the office at 619-224-6500 to make reservations.

Good fishing from Mike and the Vagabond Crew. This report brought to you by Colpitts.

June 17, 2009 ETA tomorrow at noon

Tuesday afternoon, with near yellowtail limits on the boat, we spent our remaining time at the islands fishing for real deal mossbacks and were not disappointed. As is stands right now, the jackpot will come from one of a half dozen fish taken off dropper loops.

As this is being written we are trolling for albacore and bluefin. Adding to the anticipation are promising reports from boats that fished in this area yesterday.

Fourth year Chef and newlywed Dan Cramer nailed the fresh yellowtail burgers. Several anglers swore those were the best they ever ate. Dan took advantage of fish that was swimming 30 minutes before it was served.

Jig strike, got to go.
Good fishing from Mike and the Vagabond Crew. This report brought to you by Colpitts.

We started our day with a slow pick which is what I'd call the morning, we scratched about 65 nice-sized Yellowtail by lunch. We made a move for the afternoon and only picked up a few good-sized Yellowtail. The weather is just perfect and we have seen plenty of fish. They just need to bit tomorrow.

Febuary 23--Long Range Coastal Trip Returns

We returned home Sunday morning with a couple of 20-lb class Yellowtail and mixed Rockfish. The group was a typical bunch of Vagabond regulars out for a winter break. A good time was had by all. We got some nice quality Reds and Lings but you had to work pretty hard for the fish. The bite was slow most the time except for Friday late when some of the guys put together some catches both on the Lucanus jigs and bait fishing. Excellent weather!!!

Check our new longe range schedule (refresh your browser) for our new trips, including our new sponsored Shimano trips. We have plenty of spots open on this weekend's 2 1/2-day Yellowtail & Rockcod trip. Come out and join the fun.
