Fishing Reports

February 19, 2008

Our first Rock Cod trip of the season was a blast with the Santa Paula crew, Doug Buck, Big Ron Penn (our gate keeper), Lori Withee Patella, and a host of other great passengers. This is one of our favorite trips because my family comes out to share the fun. This year, my daughter Paris joined her mom and her uncle, and she brought along her own private deckhand/boyfriend, Mike Stevens. The fishing was slow overall but Sunday we had a nice bite for a few hours on good quality Reds and Lings, making sure everyone brought home some tasty fish. We also had a few Yellowtail in the morning and finished with a 17-fish flurry in the afternoon. Dave Wilder won the 2nd-Day Jackpot with an almost 19-lb Yellow and Jerry Napolitano won the 1st-Day Jackpot with a 15-lb Ling.

We may get wet on Thursday but it's looking like the wind is going to cooperate and give us another nice weekend.

Tommy Maxfield boats a nice Yellow; Paris smiling about her Red; and Lori Withee Patella only fishes the Vagabond with it's great service and personal attention!

Well, here it is, the final story of 2007. We enjoyed great passengers, mostly calm weather, and good action every day on 35- to 110-lb Tuna. We had 4 cows: Davey Tang (200#), Chris Crueger (223#), Rick Hobbs (233#), and Danny Cash pulled in the big one, a beautiful 257-lber. We also ended up with quite a few fish between 100 and 199 lbs.

Here are top 3: Danny Cash w/257 lbs, Rick Hobbs w/233.8 lbs, and Chis Crueger w/220.6 lbs. Thanks to Jim Pea, who was always ready with his camera!

Thank you guys for the great, smooth season. We are looking forward to next year and another big season. For now, a much needed vacation for me and the crew.

The trip left under poor fishing reports but I always say that just leaves room for improvement. What an improvement! We had good tuna fishing with smaller fish in the a.m. and jumbos in the p.m. This trip saw our boat record set with a 327.6 Yellowfin Tuna caught by Tony Saldivar. We had a fun afternoon of Yellowtail on the way home. Great people, great fish, great trip.

Here are our 5 over 200 lbs: Tony Saldivar w/327.6 lbs, Kevin O'Rourke w/228.6 lbs, Chad Schaeffer w/258.6 lbs, Mark Kim w/234.6 lbs, and John Killingsworth (J.K) w/274.6 lbs. Not far behind are some big cows caught by Paul Pennello w/188.4 lbs, Vaughn Barker w/186.6 lbs, and Ron Bader w/169.4 lbs. Congrats to all!

We've had our ups and downs over the last few weeks. The ALBIES are still here and the bite is good. Most days have been good weather, the last week brought an abnormal amount of wind. Big Yellowtail at the Islands has been from good to excellent for fish ranging from 25 lbs and big ones over 40 lbs. We've been to the Lupe once for slow scratch Yellowfin in the 40-60 lb class. For 1 1/4-day we brought 22 whole Tuna aboard. We've been lucky and only had a few rough weather days. The long season looks good with nice Wahoo reports and quality Tuna!

We still have a few spots left on the longer upcoming trips. The San Diego Anglers have 2 very rare spots open on their exclusive, limited load, 16-passenger 10-day trip (#42), please call the office to check into these hot spots.

The upcoming 3-day trip will be fishing offshore for Albies and will need 25- & 40-lb tackle, 2/0 J hooks, and fluorocarbon always helps.

Those of you going on our upcoming 6-day (#39) and our 8-day (#40) bring standard tackle: 25-lb - 80-lb outfits, 1/0, 7/0 hooks, 8- & 12-oz torpedo sinkers, yo-yo jigs (Wahoo jigs, wire leaders, and Wahoo trolling gear for the 8-day), bait rigs for Green Macks size #2 or #4, fluorocarbon leader 25#, 40#, and 50#, and, of course, sunscreen is a must at the Islands.

Good fish'n, Mike and the Vagabond Crew

p.s. We are finalizing our 2008 schedule and still have few trips open for choice charter so please call the office if you are interested in having the boat all to yourself.

Same story with a new area added. Kelps down the line are holding with nice size Yellowtail and Dorados. A few Yellowfin tuna are around also but all in all fishing is slow except for a good kelp now and again.

Good fish'n, Mike and the Vagabond Crew

July 22, 2007

Jan Ishii Charter was as always a great time. Excellent people, fair to excellent weather and finally the fish decided to chew. We had limit fishing for fat Albacore and a few Bluefin. This trip is what we been waiting for, the fish are still very close and in large numbers. They are biting well but remember your 20- to 25-lb outfit as they really like that.

Good fish'n, Mike and the Vagabond Crew

ng is tough scratching with moments of hope, all in all were scratching little nice quality Albies and Yellowtail. Okay wea
July 18, 2007

Fishither and still lots to see on the meters! Hope they get with the bite mode soon. This trip was twice as good as the last so hope this trend continutes.

July 15, 2007

The Rhinehart charter, as always, was full of fun times but, unfortunately, the fish missed the call. We struggled to catch a few Albies and Yellowtail. The fish are showing signs of perking up but mostly didn't bite. The fish are showing on the electronics but just won't bite. Working on better fishing this next trip.
Jackpot winners were Mike Burrough in first place with a 28.6-lb Albie; second went to Sam Hernandez with a 27.8-lb Yellowtail; and in third was Phil Howard with 26.6 Albie.

June 24, 2007

We just returned from trip #13 with great news. The trip started a little slow with windy offshore weather and few fish. So we went to the lower Islands for some good quality Yellowtail. Coming back we had excellent weather and finally at 115 miles--Albacore! Beautiful biting 15- to 25-lb Albies in the last 1 1/2 hours. We got 41 Albies and a 30-lb Bluefin for our 13 passengers. It looks like they've arrived with good fishing Saturday at 60 miles also.

We have a light load on our trip #16 (3-day) leaving Sunday, July 1st so come get in on the Albie action. Call the office at (619) 224-6500 to snatch up the last spots.

June 13, 2007

Fishing at the Alijos was very slow so we headed back up the islands and yesterday we had a nice day of quality Yellowtail and today we are hoping to finish up our quota. Hot suntanning weather here. Sam Patella on the American Angler brought in 5 Albies late yesterday afternoon. We are moving up there to get in on the action.

If this whets your appetite to get out on the water, we still have a few choice spots left on our blockbuster June trips #13, 14 & 16. Call the office at (619) 224-6500 to snatch up the last spots.
