Fish Report for 11-12-2012

Vagaboond returns with a fine catch of Yellowfin, Yellowtail, Dorado & Wahoo, November 12, 2012

11-12-2012
Mike Lackey
Mike Lackey brought his Vagabond home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing on the morning of Veteran's Day, November 12. A strong uphill current put him into the docks about eight a.m., an hour or so early. The best fish Lackey's open-party trip of 21 anglers found on their nine-day excursion was a 228-pound tuna, from the same lower bank that has provided most if not all of the cows so far this season.

Chris Holmes, pictured of Saratoga bagged that baby with a chunk bait on a 9/0 Eagle Claw hook. He used 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Power Pro spectra on a Penn 50 S reel and an ancient Sabre 660 rod. "My best fish by eight pounds," remarked Chris to dock reporter Bill Roecker. "The fight went for an hour, with most of it on the surface and outside. Then he got tail-wrapped."

Jim Marchesini of Bakersfield won first place for a 122.8-pound yellowfin tuna. James Zuur of Moro Bay won second place for an extremely stout 76.6-pound wahoo. He said it came on a sardine and a 4/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook on 50-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 50-pound Big Game line and an Avet JX reel on a Calstar 6465 XH rod. Jeff Lampman of Moro Bay won third place for a 58.2-pound tuna.

"It was a good trip," remarked Lackey at the weigh-in. "We had a fine variety of species with yellowtail, dorado, wahoo and tuna. We fished one evening at the 13 Spot. There's been bluefin mixed with yellowfin there for two years now and I think they stay there. "The 38 was good, too," continued skipper Mike, "and there were lots of yachts on the Thetis. We had a good hit on wahoo at the 23 Spot. There's good life on The Ridge."
